| JANUARY 2012 KALENE HOSPITAL IN ZAMBIA NEEDS A MISSION DOCTOR ASAP Kalene Mission Hospital is a 170-bed mission hospital in the North-West Province of Zambia. This is in a very underdeveloped rural area, and is providing a medical service to a large catchment area, which includes patients from Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The hospital includes a full range of services (Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, O&G, HIV medicine, Tuberculosis program), and in 2011 performed over 800 intermediate and major operations, 1000 minor procedures and over 900 deliveries. There has been an active upgrading of the facility, with infrastructure development in the areas of electricity, ablutions, workshop and theatre facilities. The hospital now has reliable 24-hour electricity. A new theatre block, which includes three theatres, sterilization facilities, storage space, a seven bed intensive care unit and a hospital chapel/education centre, will be completed in 2012. Kalene has a nursing school training Zambia Enrolled Nurses (ZEN). There are currently over 70 nursing students, three tutors and a clinical instructor. The hospital helps with the spiritual and educational program of the school. Also on site is the CMML Flight Service. The flight service has two pilots and two planes and assists with the transportation of hospital patients. The hospital has worked hard to develop its partnership with the Zambian government. As a result we have a good working relationship with the district (our district director of health has worked at the hospital) and the province. We have had two Zambian doctors working with us recently, and have a number of very good Zambian nursing staff. The government pay the salaries of a number of hospital staff, and also help with supply of medicines and the hospital’s running costs (although mission input in these areas is still essential). The spiritual work is central to the purpose and daily work of the hospital. A team of local Christians provide chaplaincy services; gospel services are run in the hospital and many tracts are distributed. There are many needs and opportunities for spiritual work both in the hospital and local church. Dr John Woodfield, the medical team leader, is returning to NZ for family reasons in 2012. There is an urgent need for a mission doctor to continue the development of the hospital. Orientation and on-site training is available while Dr Woodfield is still working at Kalene. General information about the hospital is available at www.kalenehospital.com. |
| DECEMBER 2011 MINDANAO FLOOD RELIEF FUND | ||||||
| We are sure many of you have seen the news of the devastating floods on Mindanao, Philippines. Reports are that at least 600 people have been killed, mostly swept away to sea and drowned. The news reports have just generalized the area as 'Mindanao', but the disaster is specifically on the northern side of Mindanao centered in Cagayan de Oro, but it has adversely affected tribal folks over a much wider area. Firstly, let me say that none of our missionaries were in Cagayan de Oro at the time and all are safe. The following is an email update from one of our missionaries: "Lynne and I traveled to Cagayan de Oro today to retrieve some folks from the airport and we saw first hand the death and destruction. From our estimate, the wall of water was more than 20 feet high that came in the middle of the night and destroyed complete villages. Please pray that the water system can be repaired soon and rescue personnel will be safe as they spend many hours searching for the survivors and at this point in most cases bodies of the deceased." I emailed the HOWELLS (DPG Day 9) last night [18th Dec] and they said all was ok in their village, but that they were going down to Cagayan de Oro today to search for Filipino friends that live in the devastated areas. They said many of the tribal people in their area have lost all their crops and all or much of their livestock. They told me of someone close to them that had lost their total herd of eight cows. This is in the area where Steve and Ros BAIRD (DPG Day 9) are church planting in Cosina (inland from Cagayan de Oro), so it is pretty likely to have affected people in their area. Steve and Ros are on home assignment, so obviously they themselves are safe. Please pray for the search and rescue efforts (there will be many Christian organisations involved) and for the massive need for follow-up assistance over a fairly wide area. Also, please pray for Paul and Debbie Howells as they try to help where they can. They wrote today: |
"No doubt you have heard on the news about the devastating floods in Cagayan. We are going as a family today to help victims of the flood and to try to find friends who lived in the affected areas. Please pray for the people who have lost everything and who have lost their families and loved ones. Also, many of their believers in Cauyunan have lost their livestock, and their livelihoods are very much affected."
In the tribal areas where the Howells and Bairds work, the effects will be on-going for a long time to come with total loss of crops, etc. The Howells have about 20 church plants all in the affected area or bordering the area. After floods a couple of years ago in northern Luzon we were able, through relief aid given, to continue to air drop rice into some areas up to just about three months ago. It was a marvelous opportunity to assist hungry believers and open many doors through helping unbelievers also. To me this may be the most significant way in which we as NTM missionaries can help through relief aid. Typically in disasters like this the regional and city areas are the focus of aid organisations, but there often is no one in tribal areas to deliver aid and assistance.

| JULY 2011 HORN OF AFRICA FAMINE RELIEF FUND | ||||||
| More than 10 million people in East Africa are facing starvation right now, and Bright Hope, amongst other humanitarian organisations, is able to provide aid to these famine victims. AMT has contact with Bright Hope through Kevin Dyer, the founder of Bright Hope and International Teams, and we will forward funds to him. Kevin writes, "750,000 [refugees] have already left their homes and 9,000 more are streaming into Kenya every week from Somalia. There are many cases of severe malnutrition and Kenya alone says it has 2.4 million people at stressed and crisis levels. We are working through local churches to help and we want to do all we can to assist those fleeing and looking for care and compassion. It is a great opportunity to show the love of Jesus to these who are in such tragic need. In Kenya we help several ministries to Somali refugees as well as serving hundreds of thousands of the poorest people in the country." Craig Dyer, President of Bright Hope, sent this email from Bright Hope's Partnership Developer in Kenya: We know that recently you have been hearing about the drought and famine situation in the Horn of Africa Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Many commentators have even said that what is going on may be the worst since the famine in Ethiopia in the mid-80s. Somalis are the most hit as they are dealing with serious drought and famine in parts of Southern Somalia, not to mention the raging war that has gone on for 20 years. Sadly, the Islamic group, Al-Shabab, is making the situation worse by banning most relief agencies from operating in the areas they control. They, in particular, banned the agency that could help the most the World Food Program. Current estimate is that at least 1,500 Somalis are crossing the border daily into Kenya and Ethiopia. On the Kenyan side, they are going to the Dadaab Refugee Camp located at the eastern end of the country between the Kenya-Somalia border. Before the latest flow of refugees, the refugee camp was home to about 300,000 people. That number is now getting close to half a million. While Kenya is dealing with the escalating refugee crisis, it's also struggling to take care of it's own citizens, particularly those living in North Eastern Province and parts of North Rift, among them Turkana, Pokot, and Baringo. These are areas that have hardly seen rain this year. Add to this the poor maize crop for the current season and a runaway inflation. In areas like Nairobi and Mombasa, there are items that are rationed... |
Our Somali brothers and sisters in Christ, whom we minister to, are sad and heartbroken to see what's happening to their homeland and to their people. They are thankful to be alive and far away from the dire situation. Many would like to help, but then they themselves are mostly undocumented and jobless and are struggling to live from day to day. They all passed through the same refugee camp and so they know and understand the situation there and recognize that it's worse now considering the number of people coming in and the scarce resources. For a country that has been in war for the last two decades, the present situation is just aggravating the already desperate plight of these people.
Due to the issue of security and the fact that there are just too many groups trying to get in to help, the Kenyan government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are restricting access to the camp. Our response has been to work alongside partners that have authorized entry to the refugee camp. So, we are currently collecting clothes, shoes, food and other useful and helpful things that we will be handing over to our partners for transportation to and distribution in the camp to those who need them.
Donations can be sent as cheques made out to AMT marked 'Horn of Africa Relief', or monies direct deposited to:

MARCH 2011
23/3 AID UPDATE FROM GCiM
Christchurch Earthquake Relief
We have been in contact with a number of key folk in leadership and involved in forming a strategy to best use the funds that have been given. There is strong co-operation across our churches there. One initiative involves employing someone to work through existing church contacts to assist with the lodging of claims to ECQ and insurance companies, making applications for financial assistance to WINZ and other support agencies, etc. There are also plans to run holiday programmes and camps for children to get them out of the continuing uncertain environment. In all these plans, the key driver is to be able to demonstrate the love of God to others and to be able to pray with and offer spiritual counsel to the people they are assisting.
There are two Assemblies who met in buildings within the cordon area. We have not had an update on the structural damage to the Durham St facilities. However, the Korean group met in rented facilities, an older building opposite the Pyne Gould Corpn high-rise. They have not been allowed to go back to their building which has been severely damaged. There are records, computers, sound gear and other equipment they would like to retrieve if they could.
Within the Korean congregation, there are three families who lived in the Eastern suburbs and who cannot now inhabit their homes. One family had boarders to help pay the mortgage. The boarders have naturally had to find other accommodation leaving the owners with a mortgage, but not having access to their house, and not having the supplementary income they were relying on.
Please continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in Christchurch. Pray too that there will be a deep reach for God into the community there. The funds that we hold will be used to support these and other ‘people-focussed’ initiatives through our network of churches.
Japan Disaster Relief
We are currently exploring effective means to distribute our Aid funds in Japan. Recently, we have heard from our folk in Japan that there are Christian men working at the crippled nuclear plants to repair them and on electrical lines nearby. Their lives are in great danger. Sato San, a Christian from Hokkaido, is heading up the whole operation team.
We also have reports telling of Christians in the Tokyo area who have obtained the use of big vehicles and special Government permission to go on closed roads and take supplies to stricken areas. The big problem is getting fuel to run the vehicles.
“Pray that in this time of suffering, the love and salvation of God, which has been made known to the people of this land for so long, may come into focus in the hearts of the people in the face of surpassing trial.”
JAPAN EARTHQUAKE, TSUNAMI & NUCLEAR CATASTROPHE
16/3/11: We have received news that "no believer in assembly fellowship in Hachinohe, Sendai and Fukushima has suffered damage or injury, nor has there been damage to any of the halls in which they meet." A report from MSC Canada indicates that certain believers' homes and churches sustained relatively minor damage. Praise God for His mercy, but continue praying for the ongoing safety of all in the region.
11/3/11: Please pray for those affected by the huge quake and subsequent tsunami that hit the eastern coast of Japan near Sendai on Friday afternoon. Pray for senior Echoes of Service workers Charles and Rita Lawrence, who are in Fukushima (where the damaged nuclear power plant is located). As GCiM has several workers in Japan (though thankfully none in the affected area), GCiM will be the main sender of aid, including that collected by AMT and Echoes. AMT has a quake relief fund, and we will pass on monies received to GCiM. 1. If sending through AMT, cheques can be mailed to AMT marked 'Japan quake', or monies direct deposited to:
Bank: Westpac If you are in Japan the best way to donate is by postal furikae. Bank: Westpac KALENE MISSION HOSPITAL NEEDS A DOCTOR URGENTLY! Kalene Hospital will be without a doctor from 13 November until mid-January 2010. Any prospective applicant must be able to do Caesarean sections, and preferably some other forms of surgery (e.g. hernia, laparotomy, tubal ligation). But he/she also needs some experience in general medicine. It's important to remember that we don't have most of the modern diagnostic facilities that western doctors are accustomed to. Nevertheless, a doctor can still make a huge difference to lots of people in our kind of setting. The main work is for inpatients, but the doctor does see outpatients on most days as well. The hospital has around 160 beds (a little bit elastic, especially in the wet season!). Some orthopedic experience is also valuable but not vital; we get a lot of broken bones in the wet season – kids go climbing trees for the mangoes! If anyone shows any kind of interest from anywhere, we would be happy to answer any questions they might have. NB: He/she will be self-supporting. Rachel & Richard REED MANILA FLOOD As most would now know, there are many dead and hundreds of thousands of people left homeless following the devastation wreaked by Typhoon Ketsana/Ondoy and the subsequent flood in Manila, Philippines. We will be passing on donations to Ross and Lea GINN (DPG Day 9) and GLO in Manila for distribution to ministries where most needed. Praise God that no AMT workers are directly affected, but many local Christians and Christian workers (including some of the Ginns' NTM colleagues) are among the victims of this tragedy. Pray for protection of all those affected from disease and further floods. As a priority, AMT will initially send $20,000. Donations can be made by cheque made out to AMT with a note stating that it's for Manila Flood Relief, and mailed to PO Box 565, Mt Gravatt QLD 4122. Alternately, you can direct deposit. New believer Duck Lux and his family are really struggling to get by day to day. Their daughter Sokon attends Tarsha's Legacy centre (TLC) and therefore receives one good meal a day there, but her family is relying heavily on receiving food from other families living in the nearby community so they can survive. Lux became blind for an unknown reason after having pain in his head a few years ago; doctors say there is nothing they can do to help him. His wife became paraplegic after she fell from her bed shortly after giving birth to Sokon. I would dearly love to find a sponsor for this family to help them simply have enough food to eat. In return for this sponsorship (and in order to give them a sense of purpose and self-worth), we will ask Lux and his wife to assist us in the village or at TLC in some way that is within their capabilities. If you are able to sponsor them $60AUD per month please contact me and I will let you know how to go about this. 2. I received an email from Patrick today to say that the funds for our Friendship Soccer Ministry have almost completely run dry, and he will be unable to give them the required funds to continue on at the end of this month unless we receive some assistance very soon! The Friendship Soccer Team ministers to about 25 young men, who train with us each week and play games each weekend. Before these training and game times Sara and Ura minister to these guys, teaching them from the Bible and encouraging them to live lives that will make a positive difference. Many of these guys have become Christians over the last couple of years, and they continue to minister to the others in the team. This ministry costs approximately $570AUD to run each month. These costs include field rental for training and playing; bottled water for players at training and games; sponsorship for needy players (some of whom travel from the provinces to play for us); ongoing repair and replacement of boots, socks, balls etc; registration fees for competitions; and a small salary for Ura who assists Sara in mentoring the players, arranging fixtures and ensuring everyone is at games and training! If you are able to help us keep this ministry going please contact me! JULY 2009 AMT'S CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS IN 2010 AMT is planning a special celebration around October 2010 to thank God for His provision over the past 100 years, as well as to reflect on the ministry and missionaries of AMT. We are organising an international intersociety conference to coincide with the event. A special publication is also being compiled to commemorate the Centenary. Serving Together's 2010 theme will also be connected with the Centenary. We will keep you updated on the 'when' and 'where' watch this page! REED 4WD VEHICLE FUND IS NOW CLOSED Thanks to all who contributed to the purchase of the Reeds' 4WD. FEBRUARY 2009 VICTORIAN BUSHFIRE TRAGEDY Please pray for all those who have suffered loss of loved ones, property and possessions as a result of this catastrophe. The Mountain Lodge of Betel Australia, situated in the Yarra Valley, has been destroyed, with one loss of life. Pray for those who lived and worked there particularly men who were trying to get their lives back together, and now have had to endure a further setback on their road to recovery. The headquarters of MMM has also been affected. Ken Harris writes that "in recent times MMM have spread their management to many countries to control their own work and ministry the base here had already moved much of their documentation and records to other locations and so despite the fact that buildings have been lost, much of the outworking of the ministry has been saved". Tim Cranna, National Director of MMM, writes on the website "At this point in time, we are unsure of exactly what help we require, as we have yet to gain access to our property at Whittlesea. Police and fire authorities have closed the entire area, as it has not been safe." Missions Interlink reports "A number of Christian conference centres have suffered destruction, and fatalities at some are being confirmed. Both El Kanah and ESA sites at Marysville were burnt with the rest of the town, but all staff and visitors at these venues were evacuated safely." VEHICLE FUND, NOVEMBER 2007 Joanne (Special Area, DPG Day 21) has asked West Pennant Hills Community Church (NSW) to establish a vehicle fund on her behalf for an amount of AUD$10 000 to enable the purchase of a second-hand vehicle. As part of the translation project, it is necessary for Joanne and other members of the team to make regular trips to the villages, and this requires their own transport. Unfortunately, vehicles are extremely expensive in the country in which they are working, and so it is only possible to consider a second-hand vehicle. Joanne requests prayer that the proper paperwork can be put in place. Please send any contributions for this fund to AMT. JOHANNESEN CAR FUND, September 2007 Byron and Lyn JOHANNESEN (Colombia, DPG Day 1) travel 25000km annually, and a suitable medium-sized vehicle is vital for that work. Personal safety for non-Colombians is essential, and Lyn suffers from chronic back problems. The elders of Gin Gin and Oakwood Community Churches (Qld) have requested that AMT launch a Car Fund for Byron and Lyn. The target they are aiming to reach is between AU$30 000 (reliable second-hand car) and AU$37 000 (new). Please send any contributions for this fund to AMT. For more information please contact Ronald Terry on (07) 4252 6357, or the AMT office at info@amt.asn.au or on (07) 3200 5300. JENYNS CAR FUND, August 2007 Bruce and Angela JENYNS (Philippines, DPG Day 7) are involved in work in Samar which involves a good deal of travel, and a suitable second-hand vehicle is vital for that work. The elders of Ormeau Community Church (Qld) have requested that AMT launch a Car Fund for Bruce and Angela. The target they are aiming to reach is AU$7 000, which the Jenyns have indicated will be sufficient to purchase a reliable second-hand vehicle suitable for their needs.
